NuBox 1 and Portra 400: Our Day at the Beach. Film and Images.
about 6 years ago – Mon, Mar 05, 2018 at 10:05:55 PM

Hello Squares! Rob Here-

Let's look at Kodak Portra 400 as seen through the lens of NuBox 1.

My kids and I hit the beach to check out Portra and NuBox- let me tell you up front.... it's awesome! All images were shot at f22 and the standard (and only) shutter speed of NuBox, about 1/200 sec. Judging by these images using the Sunny 16 rule, I'd say we pretty much nailed the 1/200th sec. Of course there could be a little variation, but that's why I film test the camera!

Some things I noticed about these images are the beautiful cool tones of Portra. There are two images where I think my color adjustment when scanning was a little off, they are the images that are a little more "blue" as opposed to the more "magenta" tones of the day. I think a good scale to measure the more realistic color balance comes from the video.

Notice that the video when pointed into the light is a little cool and when pointed away from the light it's a little more warm, that's natural, and I think that's beautifully represented in the images themselves.

I show seven frames out of the standard eight that come from a roll of 120 film shot at 6x9. This is because of one double exposure. Even I forget to wind the film every once and a while. If you do too, then you're part of the club. If you don't, then please write a book or something because you're something special!

Ok friends, enough for now. Let me ask you some questions, though.

What are your thoughts? Which image is your favorite? Let me know in the comments below.

Cheers,

Rob

NuBox 1: How to Develop and Scan Film, an Overview
about 6 years ago – Thu, Mar 01, 2018 at 12:06:11 AM

Hello Squares!

Let's develop and scan some film.

Today's video will focus on developing and scanning film form the viewpoint of someone getting ready to develop film for the first time.

We will go over the tools needed, talk a little about what each one does, share some  information about development times, tips, and tricks, and then move on to looking at the negatives on a light table and scanning them into photo editing software

Finally, we will look at a few images and talk about the capabilities of the camera.

This video is intended to be an introduction or overview, not as a step-by-step guide. Please enjoy.

Cheers,

Rob
